

It was an exciting week for the tiny tots at Kumara Rani’s Chettinad Vidyalaya School, R. A. Puram.
Cleanliness was the theme for all the activities done at their school, be it colouring, thumb printing, greeting card making or planting saplings and the children enjoyed every minute of it. One day was also declared as a ‘hand wash’ day.
The week ended with a bang, a human chain was formed and a pledge was taken by these toddlers to keep their environment clean and green.
The post graduate and research department of geography, tourism and travel management at Queen Mary’s College, Mylapore will be celebrating World Tourism Day, on Sept. 26 and 27 at the college campus.
‘Tourex 2017’ will be inaugurated by the chief guest V. K. T. Balan, founder of Madura Travels on Sept. 26. The keynote address will be given by playback singer Senthildass. Shruthi Sharma, sales manager-business development, Inter Continental Hotel Group will give the keynote address at the valedictory function on Sept. 27. Students will present cultural programmes on both the days.
The Mylapore Trio and Sugathan conducted their 14th year kolu workshop “Navarathri Kolu Paddhathi” at their residence at Mandaveli on Sep 18. 25 students from Lady Sivaswami Girls School, Mylapore attended the two-hour lec-dem.
The students, who were thrilled to see the kolu, learnt the nuances of putting up a kolu thematically and aesthetically.
The workshop, which was held for students of classes IX and XI, also dealt with various aspects of tradition, culture, history and the stories and dolls related to Mylapore.
Four students of Vidya Mandir, Mylapore bagged medals at the international Isshinryu Karate and Kubudo Championship held on Aug 26 and 27 at JJ Indoor Stadium, Kilpauk.
The students, who had to compete with participants from Sri Lanka, Nepal and Singapore, bagged silver and bronze medals and the overall championship trophy.
The medal winners were C. P. Rahul of class V, Saurav Arunkumar of class VIII, S. Varunshankar of class VIII and P. B. Anand of class V. They were coached by Sensei S. Vikram and Sensei Shantharam. Sep 20 was an exciting day for the students of St. Anthony’s Girls School, Mandavelipakkam. They were visited by a team of academicians, teachers and students from Malaysia led by their minister for education, Datho. P. Kamalanathan.
The minister and delegates were received and honoured by P. A. Naresh, joint director of education, Manoharan, chief educational officer, correspondent Rev. Sr. Antoniammal and the headmistress Rev. Sr. Jasintha Victoria.
The event started off with a procession by the school band who led the guard of honour. Later a cultural programme was put up along with an exhibition on the various genres of Tamil literature.
It was Monday, Sep 11. A group of seniors had gathered at The Nest preschool at C. I. T. Colony, Mylapore. They were asked to bring their grandchildren for a celebration, it was Grandparents Day.
As they watched the little ones dancing and singing, smiles erupted. And when they were asked to join in for a game of musical chairs, laughter flowed. A feast rounded up their celebration. A day well spent indeed. This is an annual event held by The Nest preschool.
What probably caught the attention of the audience at P. S. Matriculation Higher Secondary School’s annual day event held recently was the dance drama on Mahaperiyava – the sage of Kanchi.
The costumes and rendition of dialogues left several speechless. Yet another surprise was a song rendered by the teachers.
T. N. Venkatesh, managing director, Co-optex, presided over the event and distributed the endowment prizes to the school toppers.
Also present at the event were the president and secretary of the P. S. Educational Society, former chief election commissioner, T. S. Krishnamurthy and Dr. K. V. S. Gopalakrishnan and the correspondent Dr. Shanti Raghavan.
A choir and keyboard performance summed up the student performances for the day.
The Samskrita Academy is organising a talk at The Sanskrit College on Oct 7 to celebrate Mahakavi Kalidasa Day. Dr. T. V. Vasudeva, deputy director, The KSR Institute, Chennai will speak on ‘Rama’s return flight’ (as in Raghuvamsa). This will be followed by musical renderings from Kalidasa’s works by Lavanya Pravin. 6.15 p.m. onwards.
The Madras Sanskrit College will be celebrating ‘Sanskrit Day’ on Oct 11 by launching its second level online course, ‘Praveshikaa 2’ in Sanskrit.
The college launched its digital campus in March this year. Since then, many documents and manuscripts have been digitised and several live broadcasts and discourses have been produced in Sanskrit. An online course in Sanskrit, Sanskrita Praveshikaa, was introduced at that time. The second level will prepare the student for an independent study of Sanskrit sastras and kavyas.

Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women, ahead of the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of former chief minister, Dr. M. G. Ramachandran will be conducting oratorical, essay, poetry, painting, rangoli and dumb charades competitions in Tamil on Oct 26 and 27 for school and college students.

Chettinad Vidyashram’s department of psychology hosted ‘Pragya’, an inter-school psychology fest, the first of its kind, on Oct 14. Six schools participated in this event. The guest of honour was Dr. Sangeetha Makesh, a counseling psychologist.
There were four events at this fest, paper presentation, a quiz, JAM and poster making. The participants were judged by four judges, all experts in the the field of psychology.
On Sep 17, a get together of the 1970 batch of Kesari High School, Mylapore was held at the school campus. It was nostalgic as the seniors talked about their school days, funny anecdotes and pleasant memories were on the cards too.
On the agenda were discussions on how to improve the infrastructure of this school. A retired professior of Psychology also offered to conduct counselling services to enhance character building.
The Kesari Old Students Association (KOSA) was formed on June 4, 2000. They have been actively arranging meets since then. They plan to open a website soon too. Alumni can contact V. Venkat at 9380132808 for details.

More than 800 people were seen enjoying themselves at the fancy fete held at Fatima Nursery and Primary School, R. A. Puram held this past weekend. 14 food and game stalls were set up.
The coordinator Pauline Gomez says, “Most of the students who study here are very poor. They come from Srinivasapuram and other areas, their parents are fishermen and auto drivers. We wanted them to have some fun. We didn’t raise too much, but we hope we will be able to use it to buy a computer”.
The 22nd annual Day of Hamsanadam Music School, run by Dr. Shubha Ganesan, was held on Oct 8 at P. S. School, Mylapore. Carnatic music guru Neyveli Santhanagopalan was the chief guest at this event which saw performances by more than than 100 students.
There were vocal and veena recitals by the students of Hamsanadam E-Learning Academy from Singapore, USA, UK and Chennai.
Several students received certificates and mementos for their outstanding performance.
The highlight of the cul-fest held at Sri Venugopal Vidyalaya School, Mandaveli on Oct 13 was probably the on stage event – junkyard groove.
The students used benches, tumblers and even serving spoons, empty water cans and buckets to make music. Some, tapped on their shoulders and laps too for better sound effects.
8 city schools took part in this day long event. Debates, channel surfing, pictionary, off stage events like flower arrangement and diya painting added the much needed zing to the event.
