Science competition in Tamil: At Bhavans

Ariviyal Poonga of Mylai Thiruvalluvar Tamizh Sangam – M.T.S. Academy, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan are jointly organizing the 9th science communication review competitions in Tamil on Jan 10 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.

A mock parliament session for youngsters

Reliving the essence of democracy was the aim of the 9th annual summit of youth parliament hosted by Chettinad Vidyashram, R. A. Puram on Nov 24.

The hour long event comprised of discussions and thought provoking questions followed by empathetic answers. The mock setup also helped the student community understand the inner workings of the parliament.

A Margazhi cultural festival will be held as part of the National Youth Day Celebration on Jan 12 at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore

An endowment has been created for this festival by a member of the school’s management committee, Dr. Prema Kasturi in memory of her grandfather K. S. Krishnaswami Iyengar for the promotion of music and dance. Dances will be presented by an alumna and the students of the school. At 1 p.m.

An inter-school basketball tournament hosted by the school will be held at the NBGES Playfield at Chitrakulam North Street, Mylapore from Jan 10-12. The event will be inaugurated by S. Dharma Krishnan, former international basketball player on Jan 10. Mihir Pandy, senior manager, IOB Cathedral Road branch, is the chief guest at the valedictory event to be held on Jan 12.

Holiday declared for schools on Friday

A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges by the state government on Friday, Jan 12 ahead of pongal.

Several local schools, like Vidya Mandir, Luz and P. S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore put out messages on whatsapp groups and their websites informing the parents of the holiday.

Rubi Puthotta, the principal of Lady Sivaswami Girls School, Mylapore says, “The students of classes X, XI and XII have their revision exams from Jan 18. This holiday will definitely be useful for them to study”.

St. Bede’s ‘old boys’ annual get-together on Jan.26

The 93rd annual meet of past pupils of St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School is to be held on January 26 morning. An AGM has also been scheduled for the day.

Only members of the Old Bedeans Association can take part – membership can be renewed or freshly made before the meet at the San Thome campus.

Rs.150 is to be collected from all members towards meeting the bills of the Old Boys meet. The AGM is at 10.30 a.m. and lunch starts at 1 p.m.

The chief guest was Jyoti Swaroop. The programme commenced with an invocation. The formal segment comprised inspirational addresses by the dignitaries on stage followed by the prize distribution ceremony.

Three books, ‘Gitamrtamahodadhi’ by (late) Viswanatha Sastri, ‘Rahasyatrayasara’ of Sri Vedanta Desika with English translation by N. Raghunathan, former chief secretary of Maharashtra, and ‘Tamraparni Mahatmya’ with Tamil translation by A. R. Ganapathi Sastri will be released on that day. At 10 a.m.

School admissions: What’s up now

It is admission time at schools. Here is a brief summary of admission process and procedures at various schools in the neighbourhood. The news will be updated every week over the next few weeks.
Vidya Mandir, Luz
For admission into LKG under the general (non-RTE) category, the application can be downloaded from the school‘s website www.vidya-mandir.edu.in from 8 a.m. on Feb 5 to 8 p.m. on Feb 6. The filled in application along with the support documents have to be dropped in the boxes kept in the school remises latest by 3 p.m. on Feb 9.

 For admission into LKG under the RTE category, printed applications will be available at the school office, free of cost from Feb 5 to 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The filled in application, with necessary support documents must be submitted to the school office latest by 3 p.m. on Feb 12. Verification of applications and documents will begin from Feb 14. Display of selected candidates will be on March 20.
For classes UKG to class X, the application will be available online from 8 am on March 5 till 8 p.m on March 7 on the school‘s website. The application must be filled as per the instructions given therein and dropped in the boxes kept in the school premises, along with support documents, latest by 3 p.m. on March 9.
For class 11, printed applications will be available at the school office from March 5 – 7, from 9 am to 2 pm. The application must be filled as per the instructions given therein and dropped in the boxes kept in the school premises, along with support documents, latest by 3 p.m. on March 9.

Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Hr Sec School, Mandavelipakkam

CSI School for the Deaf, San Thome

Kesari Hr Sec School, Mylapore 
This is a Telugu and English medium school. Classes I – V are exclusively Telugu medium based and
classes VI – X have both Telugu and English medium. Classes XI and XII are English medium based.

St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Hr Sec School, San Thome

Dominic Savio Matric Hr Sec School, San Thome

Poster painting contest for children

The need to talk in one’s mother tongue was the highlight of the speech given by the chief guest Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Agriculture, at Kesari Higher Secondary School’s 75th annual day held at the school premises recently.

The guest of honour was K. Venkataswamy Naidu, chairman, Nellore Zilla Grandhalaya Samastha. Later, a dance and skit was put by the students. Meritorious students received special prizes.

The Clarke School for the Deaf, Mylapore conducted a two day workshop on the use of technology and development of learning materials for students with special needs on Jan 10 and 11.

More than 25 participants from special schools attended this event which was inaugurated by Mohan Kameshwaran, director, Madras ENT Research Foundation.

The workshop ended with the valedictory function presented by Bro.John Xavier, director and principal of St. Louis Institute for the Deaf and the Blind, Adyar.
