Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s speech at Chicago
Vivekananda College, Mylapore is organising several events from Feb 13 to 19 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, vice president, Ramakrishna Math will inaugurate the event at the college campus on Feb 13.
Several inter-collegiate competitions will be held. On Feb 18, the students of the college will distribute clothes, sweets, books and stationery to underprivileged children.
N. Thiyagarajan, additional director general, All India Radio and Doordarshan, Chennai is the chief guest at the valedictory event to be held on Feb 19.
Inter school basketball tournament hosted by Sivaswami Kalalaya
At the 4th Invitation Inter-school Basketball Tournament hosted by Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore from Jan 24 to 26, the students of Lady Sivaswami Girls School, Mylapore lifted the trophy under the ‘Girls’ category. The students of the host school were declared the winners under the ‘Boys’ category.

Old students of Vidya Mandir meet and greet for a memorable reunion
On Dec 22, it was the 25th year reunion for the old students of Vidya Mandir, Luz. The students greeted each other with hugs, cheers and smiles that pleasant December morning. The students who walked in were given name tags, this helped to jog memories although some of them looked like they would gladly don a uniform and get right back to class.
Soon it was time for a presentation on the achievements of that batch followed by a talk by the school’s principal Shoba Raman. All the teachers, both past and present, renewed connections with the students at a sumptuous lunch held later. A fun evening at Mahabalipuram followed the events at school.
The organising committee led by V. Kamesh had been planning for this event for more than a year. Alumni from all over the globe made it to this event which was held at the school campus on Dec 22.
St. Bede’s boys win at cricket tournament
More than 30 city schools participated in the P. C. Sekhar Memorial Cricket Tournament sponsored by the alumni of P. S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore from Jan 24 – Feb 6.
For the boys of St. Bede’s Anglo Indian School, San Thome it was a win they worked hard for. Three boys of the school, P. Vignesh, A. Badrinath and I. Vetrivel also won prizes for best bowler, best player at the finals and best player of the tournament respectively.

Old students of Kesari School reunite after two decades
More than 50 students of the 1993 batch (class X) of Kesari Higher Secondary School, Mylapore walked down memory lane at their silver jubilee meet held at the school campus on Jan 26.
Phani Kiran. E, a past student, says, “We honoured six teachers who made it to the event that day. An octogenarian who took maths for us in class X, Chengalrao teacher, could hardly walk, but he still made it to the event that day”.
All the teachers received a gold coin and a memento. The past students also decided to fund the education of a few students there. Old students can contact him at 7358602262.
Toddlers of The Nest Play School celebrate their annual day
For the 35 odd toddlers of The Nest Play School, Mylapore, Feb 17, their annual day was a day they wouldn’t forget in a long time. After all, they had been preparing for this for more than eight weeks.
Uma Narayanan, the founder-principal of the school says, “Working with toddlers is always challenging. This time, we had two skits. The challenge for us was to make the student understand what they were doing as acting is possible only if one understands the script”.
A dance and rhymes in different languages summed up the celebrations that day.
A green initiative by the girls of Lady Sivaswami School
The girls of Lady Sivaswami School, Mylapore in association with Chennai Trekking Club have been quite busy with a number of activities related to their Green School Project. One such activity was held on Feb 2.
Eager middle schoolers were seen painting a wall on their campus, the theme was ‘Girls Education’.
Rubi Puthotta, the principal of the school says, “The girls of the school also maintain a small garden. And for the manure, we have dug up a pit. The leaves inside the campus and other green waste is dumped into the pit”.

St. Bede’s cricket team wins TNCA tournament for under-16 players
At the finals of the TNCA inter-school uncer-16 C. Ramaswamy trophy cricket tournament held in the city on Feb 1, the team from St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian School, San Thome lifted the trophy by beating San Thome Higher Secondary School, San Thome.
The St Bede’s team scored 150 runs for 5 in 42.1 overs and this was good enough for a win.
S.Rithik Easwaran, a resident of San Thome and a class XI student at St. Bede’s was the top scorer in both the finals and the semi-finals. He trains at the Chennai St. Bede’s Sports Foundation which conducts coaching at the St. Bede’s ground (behind All India Radio) at San Thome.

Students from local schools participate in karate tournament
Students from more than 49 schools, including 25 local schools, participated in the karate kata competition organised by Mylapore based All India Boufuuukai Isshinryu Karate Association, run by Shihan A. R. Sundar, in collaboration with Gateway The Complete School at Sholinganallur on Feb 25.
Over 200 students took part in this tournament which was inaugurated by the principal of The Gateway School, Hepzyba Gunaseelan.

Annual day held at Chettinad Vidyalaya
It was difficult to miss the soulful invocation to Lord Krishna by a group of kindergarteners at Kumara Rani Chettinad Vidyalaya’s annual day held at R. A. Puram recently.
That and several more programmes were part of the cultural programme put up by the students on that day. Actor and singer Revathi Sankaran was the chief guest. She gave away the prizes for general proficiency in academics and full attendance. Five all rounders were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1000 each.
