A memorable day for special students of local school

For the students and staff of Ekadaksha Learning Center at R. A. Puram, March 4 is a day they will always remember. It was the day the center opened its doors to special children eight years ago.

This year, two special guests who have always been a pillar of strength for the team, Marijanne Joshi (seen in the picture) and Seshadri, joined in the celebration.

At the award ceremony, students received awards for being the best groomed student, the best artist, the best performer and so on. There were awards for teachers as well.

Works of art by the students were displayed. Later, students danced to some preppy movie songs.


Queen Mary’s College hosts convocation

Queen Mary’s College, Mylapore hosted a convocation at its campus on March 8. The convocation for the 2016 batch of students who have passed UG ,PG and M Phil degree studies was conducted  at the Golden Jubilee Hall.

The convocation did not take place during 2017 in any government-run college as a new vice-chancellor had not been appointed.

This week’s convocation took place in two sessions, the morning one was for Arts and Commerce students and the afternoon one for Science students.

The morning session was presided over by K.P. Anbazhagan, state minister for higher education.

Some 856 students were conferred with their respective degrees and the minister distributed prizes to meritorious students.

The afternoon session for Science graduates was presided over by M. Bhaskaran, Vice Chancellor of TN Open University. 952 students received their respective degrees. Bhaskaran also distributed prizes to toppers.

QMC has 24 departments and the convocation for students of 23 departments took place. (the French department provides only courses as second language).

Funfest held at Chettinad Harishree Vidyalayam

The children and parents of Chettinad Harishree Vidyalayam organized a fund raiser with a funfest at their Srinivasa Avenue campus on Feb 17.

A plethora of stalls vending a variety of merchandise, several shows for children and adults and folk art performances throughout the day by the ‘Namma Parambariyum’ Initiative welcomed the crowd.

Not only was it an entertainer, it was also a zero wastage, green event which showcased the learnings of the children from their Global Citizenship program called Vasudhaiva Kudumbakam.

The event saw a foot fall of 4500 people and the funds raised will be utilised for various projects.

Trekking tragedy in south TN: teacher from local school severely injured

It was a black day for several trekkers who went out on a trekking expedition at Bodi Hills in Theni district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Many lost their lives in the wildfire at Kurangani Hills that afternoon just when the trekkers were climbing down. Among the severely injured was Anu Vidhya, a psychologist at The Grove School, Alwarpet.

Anu Vidhya, an animal lover, was part of the 24 member team organised by the city-based Chennai Trekking Club. She was rescued with 90% burns on her body and is battling for life at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

The correspondent of Grove School Prasanth Krishna says, “She is a kind and good teacher. She is also an animal assistant therapist here. We wish her a speedy recovery”.

 

Gymnastics and dramas mark P. S. School’s annual day

The gymnastics demonstration by the students of P. S. High School (North) at their annual day celebration on March 3 definitely defied gravity. Their pyramid formation left the audience spellbound.

The principal of the school, T. Ananthanarayanan says, “This school started in 1916 with just the primary section. In the early 1960s, it became a high school. For more than five decades, this annual event is something the students really look forward to. It provides a opportunity for them to display their talents.

The chief guest for this event was Dr. K. Ganesan, retired principal, Vivekananda College, Mylapore.

Sanskrit College to celebrate ‘Founders Day’ this weekend

The Madras Sanskrit College will be celebrating their 112th Founder’s Day on March 24 at the college premises. The chief guest V. S. Sirpurkar, retired judge, Supreme Court of India, New Delhi will address the students and distribute the prizes. Scenes in Sanskrit ‘Shakuntale Sabha Pravesha’ will be enacted by college students. At 84, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Road, Mylapore. At 4.30 p.m.

Local preschool celebrate annual day

It was all about different kinds of dances at Mylapore based Mahima Cultural Center’s annual day held at P. S. School, Mylapore recently.
The enthusiasm of the children was evident in all the performances, be it the traditional dances like karagattam and kollatam or the western dances like the cowboy and the batton dance.
Manju Bhashini, one of the partners who manages the play school says, “65 children have been preparing for this event for more than two months. For the costumes, we asked the children to bring the dresses they have as we did not want the children to spend exorbitantly for just a one day event. We then added accessories for a grand look. Our teachers made most of the accessories from recyclable material”.
The chief guest was Wilbur Lee, a diplomat from the American Embassy.

Panguni fest: Schools to close early tomorrow

Schools will close early  in lieu of the Arubathimoovar procession, which is expected to begin after 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

At Vidya Mandir, Mylapore, parents have been asked to pick up their wards at 11.30 a.m.

The principal of P. S. Senior Secondary School, Lakshmi Srinivasan says, “Except class XII, all the other students are on their break now. We reopen on April 2. Class XII students will leave by noon tomorrow”.


Senior alumni of P. S. School participate in a unique event

Since 2014, the alumni of the 1964 batch of P. S. High School, Mylapore, led by the president of the PSHS 1964 Students Association P. M. Sridhar, have been meeting on the fourth Saturday of every month.
They were planning to celebrate their 50th reunion in a grand way and when they did, they made a considerable donation to their school and to P. S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore.
Soon they realised that a little of that was left over from the funds collected could be used for a special event. They decided to conduct a Bhima Ratha Shanthi for the septuagenarians of the group on Feb 18. 40 couples turned up for this event held at Hotel Sukha Nivas at Luz.  A homam was held with five priests followed by a chanting session and then lunch.

Students, teachers and non-teaching staff paint for Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam’s annual show

‘Varnajala’ was the talk of the campus at Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam in R. A. Puram. This annual exhibiti0n of art is unique in that students, teachers and the non-teaching staff express their creativity and the paintings go up on the walls in select places on this campus.

The school managers say that at this school, children are actively encouraged to explore their
passion for theatre, music, dance, art and craft throughout the year besides
academics.

And even non-teaching staff like the kitchen staff, gardeners and security personnel are invited to b e part of the creative expression. Said the school’s PR executive, “Some of them do need help with the
choice of art/craft. They are provided with the materials they need along with help for
the process of making the art/craft they have chosen.”

So what happens to the art works after the show?
Some of the artworks are framed and given to guest dignitaries, after receiving consent from the children. Some children also opt to donate their work for a cause close to their heart. Others carry their work back home.

The show was held earlier this week.

March 24. The teachers and staff of Sree Karpagavalli Vidyalaya, Mylapore are getting ready to welcome the guests for their annual day event.

The prize winners are assembled. Teachers and students go through the agenda one last time.

As the guests slowly arrive, the excitement grows. Several of them are alumni, seeing their school stirs up memories of their childhood.

R. Sundararajan, former chairman and managing director, Indian Bank is one of them. The school always laid emphasis on discipline, language and mathematics. This helped me excel, he says. Another old student, popular writer S. R. G. Sundaram, presents a poetic play. An alumni association is inaugurated.

A special address is given by Mylapore MLA R. Nataraj.

Soon, it is time to disburse. They leave, with a spring in their step and a tune in their heart.

Admission for Anglo-Indians to St. Bede’s school

Admission for Anglo-Indian boys to classes 6, 7, 8 and 11 at St.Bede’s Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School in San Thome and to the school’s boarding will be held from May 2 to 4 this year.

Applicants will need to present their mark sheets, a letter from the parish they are attached to and a community certificate.

St. Bede’s boys win at two cricket tournaments

At the 7th edition of the Chockalingam Memorial cricket tournament for U-14 boys, the team from St. Bede’s Anglo Indian School, San Thome (seen in the picture) lifted the trophy by beating the boys from St. Patricks School.

The winners scored a total of 210 for 4 in 50 overs as against the runners up who were all out for 180 in 48 overs.

They also won the TNCA B. Somasundaram Cricket tournament held in the city recently.

Sankara jayanthi at Sanskrit College

QMC says goodbye to faculty, staff on their retirement

This is the season to say goodbyes at school and college campuses. Students hosting parties after the line of final exams. Teachers wishing seniors who retire.
And so it was a session of warm words and goodbyes at Queen Mary’s College last week.
A formal send-off was paid to the faculty and sub-staff of the college with a guard of honour.
Those who are retiring included Ramaligam, Dhanasekharan  and Lakshminarayanan of non- teaching staff, faculty members Dr Shaheen (botany) Dr Nalina Sundari (zoology), Dr Raji ( Geography & additional controller of exams), Dr Sivasakthi (Tamil), Dr M.A.Bhageerathi (music) Dr Vasanthalakshmi (English), Dr Aruna Sundari (history), and Vanajothi (staff in the Controller’s Office).
Later, there was an informal send-off  party for Dr. M.A.Bhageerathi in which many HoDs too part.

Admissions application forms on sale at Dr.MGR Janaki College

Application forms for admission into under graduate and post graduate courses are available at Dr. MGR Janaki College on all working days, including Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Candidates who would like to join B. A. (Natya) have to contact the college office for scholarship details.

Free eye camp: At Karpagavalli Vidyalaya School

Mylai Thiruvalluvar Tamizh Sangam in association with the alumni association of Sree Karpagavalli Vidyalaya, Government eye hospital at Egmore and Chennai Metro West Lions Club are organising a free medical camp on April 29 at the school campus at East Mada Street, Mylapore.

This is an opportunity for orphans / destitute (boys only) for pursuing education with food, shelter etc., provided totally free of cost.

Those who have passed/qualified in Std. V are eligible for admission into Std. VI (Tamil medium only) at the residential High School at Mylapore and continue till X Std.

Last date for application: May 15, 2018.

Those with a pass in X Std., with a score of more than 70% may seek admission into three year Diploma Course in Mechanical, Automobile or Computer Engineering.

Candidates with a pass in XII Std., with mathematics and good score will be considered for (lateral) admission in the second year of the Diploma Courses.
