Vivekananda alumni meetThe inaugural alumni meet of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College held recently, saw hundreds of its graduates meet and network with each other. There was a good participation of alumni from the 1940 batch to the 2010 batch, across various streams.

The welcome note was delivered by P. K. Ranganathan, a member of the organising committee who talked about bringing together all the alumni members comprising five lakh graduates. Several other alumni members including M. S. Sunderrajan, former CMD of Indian Bank and R. Sivakumar, partner, KARRA and Co. too talked about their delight in being a part of this meet and the need to contribute to the college and towards social causes.

Post the formal sessions the alumni spent some lighter moments together followed by lunch.

Runners up at ScintillationsP. S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore conducted its 30th annual cultural festival ‘Scintillations’ on July 29 and 30. Students from over a dozen city schools enthusiastically participated in various events such as light music, JAM, shipwreck, quiz, art events and so on.

Amrutash Misra, managing director of Multistory Learning Pvt. Ltd, inaugurated the cultural event on Friday and renowned cultural vocalists, Ranjani and Gayathri, presided over the valedictory function on Saturday.

Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, Nungambakkam were declared the overall winners and Vidya Mandir, Mylapore and Chettinad Vidyashram, R. A. Puram (seen in the picture) bagged the runners-up trophy. The winners’ event was won by Vishal Shivakumar of PSBB, Nungambakkam.”

Dance drama, plays and more at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya’s annual day celebrations

Sivaswami Kalalaya annual dayStudents of Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore presented a colourful and cultural bonanza titled “Gems from our Literature” at their annual day celebrations held on July 29.

The variety programme included a medley of songs composed by great Indian composers like Jayadeva, Meerabai, Thyagaraja, Shayama Sastri, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Ganapati Sachidananda Swaminji sung by a 80 member strong choir and accompanied by instrumentalists.

Some scenes from R.K. Swami’s evergreen and delightful “Swami and Friends” was presented in the English play where Swami mistakes a thief for a ghost and catches him. Two dance dramas too were staged – the first, highlighting the inherent beauty and divinity of “Andaal’s life and the important events” therein and the second “Kalidasa’s Kumaara Sambhavam”, portraying the propitious circumstances leading to the birth of Kumara or Lord Muruga whose mission was to eliminate the
wicked demon Tarakasura.

A futuristic Tamil play “Thirukkuralin Perimai” depicted the life of the people of Antartica in 2018, where the people are still inspired by Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural.

The programme was presided over by T.R. Mani, President, N.B.G.E.S. The chief guest for the programme was Lakshmi Menon, vice-president, (Sales and New Initiatives), the New Indian Express. She distributed the prizes to the academic toppers and spoke of the need for being kind and humane.

Yellow day held at Boston International School, Alwarpet

Boston international schoolThe students of Boston International School at Alwarpet recently celebrated Yellow Day and English Activity Day at its campus at Alwarpet.

Students of Pre-kg, LKG and UKG came to school dressed in yellow, danced and talked about yellow things. Classes 1-5 celebrated English Activity Day by performing English skits.

A carnival was also held wherein indoor games and refreshments were organised for the students and parents. The school is located at T. T. K. Road, Alwarpet and can be contacted at 24353706.

Primary students receive prizes at P. S. Senior SchoolA prize distribution ceremony was held for primary students at P. S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore today morning (Aug 4). Prizes and medals were distributed to the winners of the sports day event held last week. The chief guest was alumnus and director of Cognizant Tech – C. Swaminathan.

Debates and resolutions mark Model UN conference hosted by Harishree Vidyalayam

Model UN conference - harishree vidyalayamOn July 30 and 31, Chettinad Harishree Vidyalayam, R. A. Puram was teeming with students dressed in formals and classrooms that resounded with healthy debate. It was the third edition of the school’s Model United Nations Conference. The event which witnessed the participation of over 200 students from 15 city schools was put together by a large team that comprised of the school students, staff and management.

This year, six committees were hosted and presided over by a board of external Chairs who were specially invited for the conference. Cultural programmes marked the opening ceremony held at the school auditorium. Heated debates and the formation of some interesting resolutions followed. At the closing ceremony, the delegates were lauded for their performance in their respective committees.

Based on the decision of the executive board, ‘Best Delegate’ and ‘High Commendation’ awards were given committee wise. Chettinad Vidyashram emerged the ‘Best School Delegation’, through a calculation based on a tabulation of the number of awards won and overall participation of each school. The prize distribution was shortly ensued by an informal gathering of dance and music.

HR Practices Workshop on at Vivekananda College till Aug 9

The departments of Accounting and Finance and Bank Management of Vivekananda College,
Mylapore will be conducting a HR practices workshop till Aug 9 at its premises. Group discussion sessions will be held tomorrow (Aug 5) followed by a stress interview on Aug 8 wherein students will be asked to draft their resume and attend a live interview session. Interviewers will then talk to the candidates about their performance.

Girls of Lady Sivaswami School learn value education; Area around school cleaned

Lady sivaswami girls school - cleaning campaignOn Saturday, Aug 6 morning, about 30 girls of Lady Sivaswami School, Mylapore got together to clean the compound outside their school, as part of the value education syllabus imparted to them at school.

Their principal Rubi Puthotta says, “We impart value education to our students with support from Sri Ramakrishna Math, Belur. Cleanliness was a chapter in their syllabus and the girls wanted to apply this concept practically. We wanted to encourage them and so every week on Saturday morning, a small group of students and the staff coordinator V. Prema will get together to clean the campus inside and the compound outside. This week class VII students pitched in, next week they will be joined by students of class VIII”.
