Harishree Vidyalayam students remember Rajah Muthiah Chettiyar

On Aug 5, the students of Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam, R. A. Puram celebrated the 112th birthday of Rajah Muthiah Chettiyar at their school premises.

The event started with a bit of tradition wherein the principal, along with the chief guest – actor Yugi Sethu, lit the kuthu vilakku. Later the Tamil students put together a small powerpoint presentation about the life of Raja Muthiah Chettiyar.

The event ended with a song, a dance and a small debate, in Tamil – all put together by the students and teachers of the school.

Special students of Ekadaksha Center exchange bands and hugs on ‘Friendship Day’

Ekadaksha - Friendship Day16 students of Ekadaksha Learning Center, a special school at Jeth Nagar, R. A. Puram, got together to celebrate ‘Friendship Day’ on Aug 8 at the school campus. The celebrations began with the famous song from ‘Barney and Friends’ after which the students exchanged friendship bands and hugs.

After an impromptu dance session, the students laughed and jumped while a teacher there blew bubbles. Two students who take remedial classes at the center – Gautam and Mitresh were taken to Orchard, a hangout place, where they ate their favourite food, chatted and had fun. Vidya Mandir alumni meet to plan future events and activities

The members of Vidya MandVidya Mandir alumni associationir Alumni Association (VMAA) met on July 30 to discuss the activities for the coming year and also review the feedback received on activities carried out in the recent past.

The alumni have decided to conduct the limited over Tennis ball Cricket Tournament on Aug 14 at the school premises. This event will be organised by the alumni of the 2012 batch.

It has also been decided to award the contract, to keep the recently renovated toilets clean and neat, to Adroit Facilities. Other activities that have been planned for the current year include providing a lift, ease traffic flow during pick up and drop times, provide a reasonable parking space for vehicles coming in and going out of the school and participate in development of the areas in and around the canal side of the school.

Plans were also made to hold the general meeting of the alumni association on Sep 17.

Workshop on HR practices held at Vivekananda College

Vivekananda College - seminarA workshop, for the upcoming employees to evolve, adapt, adopt and succeed in their corporate workplaces, was organised by the departments of accounting, finance and bank management of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College (evening), Mylapore, from Aug 3 – 9.

The event titled as ‘HR Practices Workshop’, was conducted by Team Confluence, a student association.  This five-day workshop was aimed at providing light to the final year students about the expectations of their future employers and requirements of work environment.

The inaugural day focused on the first attempt of a candidate to impress his interviewer through his resume. Rathinavel Rajan, head, Ball Beverage Packing India, Chennai, shared his valuable insights on preparing an impressive resume and the communication aspects in an interview.

The second and third day of the workshop had virtual group discussion sessions. About 240 students from various departments were divided into groups of 15 members each and were provided with topics on various social and industrial aspects. All participants were provided with remarks on the do’s and don’ts of group discussions and and scope for improvement by HR managers – Badhrinath, Mahesh and Rangarajan from MMC Infotech.

On Aug 8, all students were required to submit their respective resumes after the inaugural session. Out of which, top six resumes were shortlisted for the fourth day event the ‘The Stress Interview’ session. The six candidates were interviewed by K. Mohana Krishna, head – HR, Taj Vivanta.

The final day of the workshop emphasised on the requirements expected from an upcoming employee. It was a sum-up of the five-day event with Desikamani Gopaladesikan, founder and CEO of Mentor Learning Services, sharing his experience and insights to the final year students. All the students were provided with a participating certificate and the Top-3 candidates, chosen as the best of six by the stress interviewer, were also given a certificate.

Puppets used to create awareness about biodiversity

puppetry workshopVasavi Trust organised a puppetry workshop for the students of classes I to V at Sri Ramakrishna Centenary Primary School, a school which meets the educational needs of children from poor households in the Mylapore area, on Aug 8.

The workshop which dealt with increasing biodiversity awareness through puppets was conducted by Dr. R. Bhanumathi, managing trustee, Pavai Centre for Puppetry.

Children were visibly excited as they devised their puppets and own stories based on different themes and presented them in plays. Swami Satyajnanananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Students Home was a guest at the event.

Founder’s Day, Inter school theatre-play contest held at M. Ct. M School

M.ct. M Founders dayTwo events were held at M. Ct. M Matriculation School, Luz during the first week of August. The first – ‘Founder’s Day’ was held on Aug 2 (seen in the picture). MLA R. Natraj and his wife Nirmala Natraj were the guests at this event.

Various cultural programmes such as an English and Tamil play, a Spanish dance and folk dances were performed by the students of both the Matriculation and International schools. School toppers of classes X – XII were given proficiency awards and staff who served the institution for 10 years were honoured with meritorious awards. A rolling trophy was handed over to the humanities department for their academic achievement.

The second was an inter-school theatre play contest held on Aug 3 to commemorate their founder and correspondent Late Sivagami Pethachi.

National Public School, Gopalapuram bagged the rolling trophy at this event. Theatre artistes Krishna Kumar and Dushyanth Gunashekar were the judges. All the participants received certificates at the event.

Vidya Mandir alumni conduct tennis ball cricket tournament

Vidya Mandir - tennis ball cricket tournamentThe 2012 batch of Vidya Mandir, Luz, led by Harish Kumar, conducted a tennis ball cricket tournament on Aug 14 at the school premises. The tournament was primarily conducted to encourage the recent batches to participate in the activities of the alumni association.

8 teams comprising more than 60 alumni members from 1989 – 2016 took part in this tournament. More than 50 members were from the 2010 – 2016 batch. The unique format of the game consisted of 6 over matches with one mandatory power play and only one bowler allowed to bowl two overs. The knock out stages saw 8 over matches with two power plays and two bowlers allowed to bowl two overs each.

‘The Munch’ , a Start up, by Rohan of 2012 provided breakfast and lunch for the players. The 2012 batch were declared the winners and the 2015 batch were declared the runners-up. The orange cap for best batsman was given to Surender and the purple cap for best bowler was given to Karthick Sudarshan, both 2015 members. Cash prizes were given to the winners.

Chettinad vidyashram - MaithriChettinad Vidyashram hosted its biennial cultural fest, ‘Maithri’ on Aug 19 and 20 at the school campus. The event was inaugurated by vocalist Nithyashree Mahadevan, who shared a few words of wisdom with the students.

The cul-fest, with over 4000 students from nearly 60 schools, started off with an on-stage event – channel surfing which left the audience roaring with laughter. Creative writing, light music, basketball and other events followed. The participants were judged by renowned adjudicators.

The festive mood was kept constant with notable celebrities entertaining the audience with their various performances from time to time. The music and dance performances by the host students had the audience cheering loudly.

More than 80 schools battled it out in 36 events for the final championship titled “Mr./Ms. Maithri”. The valedictory function, held on Aug 20 , was graced by Ashwin Jerome and Hudson Samuel, who shared memories from their childhood days with the students. The festival ended with the prize distribution ceremony.

Sivaswami Kalalaya alumni meetSir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore recently conducted its annual alumni meet at the school campus. Several students from the 1998 batch to the 2016 batch attended this event. The event started off with the welcome note by the principal of the school M. S. Jayasri. A cultural programme followed after which discussions were held about the need to contribute to the school and towards social causes.

Sports meet, Sanskrit Day at Sivaswami Kalalaya

Two events will be held at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore this following week.

The first, a sports meet, will be held on Aug 27. Mita Venkatesh, principal, Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar is the chief guest at the school’s junior sports meet to be held for classes LKG to V at 8 a.m. M. V. Rajasekhar, IAAF Coach, RDC Jakarta, is the coach for the annual sports meet to be held on the same day at 2.30 p.m. At School Playfield, 33, Chitrakulam North Street, Mylapore.

The second event, Sanskrit Day, will be held on Aug 29 at the school premises. The programme will comprise a speech, tongue twisters, a veda recital, a dance on Vinayaka and a drama on ‘Respecting elders’. The chief guest is Arunasundaram, Sanskrit professor, Sanskrit College, Mylapore. 10 a.m. onwards.

Ekadaksha Learning Center, a special school at R. A. Puram, has started Varma healing sessions for children with special needs. It will be conducted by one of the parents, K.V.Ganga, who has been trained to practice Varma healing.

Varma, specifically designed to balance the energy/electrical flow in the brain and central nervous system will help in reprogramming the brain to create better pathways for information processing.

Gowrin Special School - annual day celebrationsThere was a flurry of activity at Dakshinamurthy auditorium at P. S. School, Mylapore on Aug 19 evening. Several students of Gowrin Special School had gathered there to celebrate their annual day, an event they had been practising for and looking forward to for a few months now.

While a few students were seen practising their routines, others were seen listening to their teacher’s instructions. When it was time to finally put up their show, the audience was left spellbound.

Everything was perfect – their yoga postures, dance performances and a mime held to discourage too much phone usage. A fancy dress show too was held with the students dressed up as national leaders.

On Aug 26, a talk was given by Justice M. Karpaga Vinayagam on the need to inculcate the three C’s, to be cheerful, careful and calm in one’s life. He also urged the students to respect their nation, teachers and parents.
